Transition Nayland

Waste & Recycling

Current levels of consumption in the UK and other rich world countries are unsustainable. If everyone in the world consumed at the average rate we do in the UK, we would need three planets.

We need to move to 'one planet living' at home, at work or travelling around.

Twentieth century consumption patterns have sparked overwhelming levels of environmental deterioration. If they are allowed to continue unchecked, the dismantling of the natural world will have catastrophic effects. It will almost certainly negate the material gains derived from accelerated consumerism, and may undermine our ability to survive on the planet.

It is not just individuals who can make a difference. By thinking globally and acting locally, community groups are also helping to change consumption habits. Understanding the waste hierarchy is the first step in living more sustainably.

Potential projects

As part of Transition Nayland we would like to start looking at reducing our levels of waste and increasing the percentage of waste being recycled by:

  • Raising awareness of how you can reduce wastage in the way you shop.
  • Improving our recycling facilities in the village.
  • Encouraging reuse.
  • Raising awareness of sustainability.

Live projects

Transition Nayland has implemented a battery collection point in the Post Office, when the box is full, we take it to the local battery recycling collection point in Hadliegh.
